Duties of the County Attorney

Prosecution
The County Attorney prosecutes all misdemeanor cases and handles felony preliminary hearings in District Court. Misdemeanor offenses are those crimes punishable by up to 12 months in the county jail and/or a fine of up to $500.00. These duties also include prosecution of DUI cases, other traffic offenses, and juvenile cases, to name a few.

Provide Legal Counsel to Fiscal Court
The County Attorney represents the local government in all its legal actions. The County Attorney attends all fiscal court meetings and advises the court on legal matters.

Collection of Delinquent Real Estate Taxes
If property taxes are not paid within a specified amount of time, the delinquencies are turned over to the County Attorney for collection. The County Attorney may sure to foreclose liens on the delinquent properties.

Collection of Bad Checks
The County Attorney assists merchants and others in collecting on bad checks.

Child Support Enforcement
The County Attorney assists custodial parents of children in establishing paternity, child support orders, and the collection of child support obligations.
